Adam Smith (1723-1790)
Smith supplied the first widely read description of a self-correcting market. In the Wealth of Nations (1776) he explained how a shortfall in the quantity brought to market raises price and attracts additional supply, while a glut depresses price and drives some sellers out, so that price tends toward the level that just covers ordinary costs of production. The mechanism requires no coordinator, only competition on both sides. Smith's account is qualitative rather than mathematical, and he was clear that it depended on genuine competition — he was consistently skeptical of merchants' tendency to collude.
Léon Walras (1834-1910)
The French-born economist at Lausanne who founded general equilibrium theory. His Elements of Pure Economics, published from 1874, modeled an entire economy as a system of simultaneous equations in which the prices of all goods and factors are determined together. Walras introduced tâtonnement, a conceptual auction in which a price is announced, excess demand or supply is observed, and the price is revised until every market clears. He is also associated with Walras's law, the accounting identity that the values of excess demands across all markets must sum to zero — so if every market but one clears, the last one clears too.
Alfred Marshall (1842-1924)
Marshall gave equilibrium the form students actually use: two curves in one market, intersecting at a single price and quantity, with everything outside that market held constant. This partial-equilibrium method trades some realism for enormous tractability. He also formalized the time dimension of equilibrium, distinguishing the market period (supply essentially fixed), the short run (some inputs variable), and the long run (all inputs and firm entry variable), showing that the same demand shift produces different price and quantity outcomes depending on how much time producers have. Consumer surplus, another Marshall contribution, is measured directly off the equilibrium diagram.
Paul Samuelson (1915-2009)
Samuelson's Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947) treated equilibrium as a formal mathematical problem and asked when an equilibrium is stable — that is, whether the market returns to it after a disturbance. His correspondence principle argued that assumptions about stability place testable restrictions on comparative-statics predictions, tying the dynamics of adjustment to the static results students are asked to derive. Through his 1948 textbook Economics, Samuelson also standardized the classroom presentation of surplus and shortage as the market's disequilibrium states. He received the Nobel Memorial Prize in 1970.
Kenneth Arrow (1921-2017) and Gérard Debreu (1921-2004)
In 1954 Arrow and Debreu published a rigorous proof, using fixed-point methods, that a competitive general equilibrium exists under a stated set of assumptions — convex preferences, no market power, complete markets, and others. Debreu's Theory of Value (1959) presented the framework in its most austere axiomatic form. Their work confirmed that Walras's vision was internally coherent while making the required assumptions explicit, which is precisely what allowed later economists to study what happens when those assumptions fail. Arrow received the Nobel Memorial Prize in 1972 and Debreu in 1983.
