1776: Adam Smith and the Market Price

Adam Smith's An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, published in 1776, gave the supply-and-demand idea its first widely read treatment. Smith distinguished between the market price of a good — what it actually sells for on a given day — and its natural price, the price that just covers the ordinary cost of labor, land, and capital used to produce it. When the quantity brought to market falls short of what buyers want at the natural price, Smith argued, competition among buyers bids the market price up; when more is brought to market than buyers will take, sellers undercut one another and the price falls. The market price therefore "gravitates" toward the natural price. Smith had no diagram and no curves, but the mechanism at the heart of every modern supply-and-demand problem is unmistakably there.

1817: Ricardo and the Cost Side

David Ricardo's On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817) sharpened the supply side of the story. Ricardo worked in the classical tradition that traced the value of a good largely to the labor required to produce it, and he added a powerful account of how costs rise as production expands: as demand for grain grew, farmers had to bring less fertile land into cultivation, raising the cost of the marginal bushel and generating rent on the better land. That argument gave economists an early, rigorous model of an upward-sloping supply relationship — output can be expanded, but only at increasing cost. Ricardo's classical framework dominated British economics for roughly half a century, and its emphasis on cost of production is the ancestor of the modern supply curve.

The 1870s: The Marginal Revolution Builds the Demand Side

The classical school explained cost well but struggled with value: why is water, essential to life, cheap, while diamonds are dear? In the 1870s three economists working largely independently supplied the answer. William Stanley Jevons published The Theory of Political Economy in 1871, Carl Menger published his Principles of Economics the same year, and Léon Walras published the first installment of his Elements of Pure Economics in 1874. All three located value not in total usefulness but at the margin — in the satisfaction from one additional unit, which falls as consumption rises. Diminishing marginal utility explains why buyers will only take more of a good at a lower price, which is exactly why the demand curve slopes downward. Economists call this shift in thinking the marginal revolution.

1890: Marshall's Scissors

Alfred Marshall's Principles of Economics (1890) fused the two halves. Marshall argued famously that asking whether value is determined by utility or by cost of production is like asking which blade of a pair of scissors does the cutting — demand and supply act together. His book made the intersecting-curves diagram the standard visual language of economics, and it is Marshall's convention that students still use today: price on the vertical axis, quantity on the horizontal, even though price is usually treated as the independent variable. Earlier writers had drawn pieces of the picture — Antoine Augustin Cournot expressed demand as a mathematical function of price in 1838, and the engineer Fleeming Jenkin published a diagram with both curves together in 1870 — but it was Marshall who made the graph universal.

The 20th Century: The Textbook Model

Paul Samuelson's Economics, first published in 1948, carried Marshall's diagram to a mass student audience and fixed the modern classroom treatment: a list of demand shifters, a list of supply shifters, and the discipline of distinguishing a shift of a curve from a movement along it. Samuelson also popularized comparative statics — the practice of comparing one equilibrium to another after a single change, holding everything else constant — which is the exact skill any supply-and-demand shift exercise is testing. Later work extended the framework in every direction, from general equilibrium theory to the empirical estimation of real-world demand and supply curves, but the two-curve diagram remains the first analytical tool almost every economics student learns.
