Who They Were

John Nash (1928-2015) was an American mathematician whose work in the early 1950s became foundational to modern game theory and, through it, to economics. As a young researcher he developed the concept now known as the Nash equilibrium in a handful of short but profound papers on non-cooperative games. His later life was marked by a long struggle with mental illness before a recovery in his later years. Recognition from the economics profession arrived decades after the original work: in 1994 he shared the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences with John Harsanyi and Reinhard Selten for their pioneering analysis of equilibria in the theory of non-cooperative games. His story, including the long delay between his contributions and their honouring, became widely known well beyond economics.

Nash's central contribution is the Nash equilibrium: a situation in a strategic interaction where no player can do better by unilaterally changing their strategy, given what everyone else is doing. This concept gave economists a general tool for analysing competition and cooperation among decision-makers who each anticipate the others' choices. It underpins the modern study of imperfect competition, bargaining, and strategic behaviour. His 1994 Nobel, shared with John Harsanyi and Reinhard Selten, recognised this analysis of equilibria in non-cooperative games - honouring work he had done roughly four decades earlier. The idea is directly examinable in introductory microeconomics: students learn to read a payoff matrix, find dominant strategies, and identify a Nash equilibrium, including in prisoner's dilemma games.
