Who They Were

Wassily Leontief (1906-1999) was a Russian-born American economist who spent much of his career at Harvard. He is best known for developing input-output analysis, a method for mapping how the output of each industry in an economy serves as an input to others, making the web of interdependence among sectors tractable and measurable. This work turned the abstract idea of general interdependence into a practical empirical tool used in economic planning, forecasting and policy analysis around the world. In 1973 he received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for the development of the input-output method and its application to important economic problems, the year after John Hicks and Kenneth Arrow were honoured for general equilibrium and welfare theory. He was also a persistent advocate for grounding economic theory in empirical data.

Key Contributions

Leontief's central contribution, input-output analysis, represents an economy as a grid of industries in which each sector both produces goods and consumes the products of others. By quantifying these flows in an input-output table, economists can trace how a change in demand for one product ripples through the whole system, a framework widely adopted for national planning and structural analysis. Applying his methods to trade, his 1953 study found that United States trade patterns did not fit the standard factor-endowment model neatly: a capital-abundant country appeared to export relatively labour-intensive goods. This surprising result became known as the Leontief paradox and prompted decades of further research into the determinants of trade. He received the Nobel Memorial Prize in 1973 for the input-output method.
